Low Libido in Women (Low Sex Drive): Symptoms & Causes

Low Libido is a condition that can turn up in both men and women. It refers to a situation where a decrease in sex drive occurs which interferes with individual sexual activity.  Female sexual interest or arousal disorder is a sexual dysfunction which as an outcome results in a lowered sex drive in women. In medical terms, this is known as HSDD i.e Hypoactive sexual desire disorder.

Symptoms and Signs of Low Libido

  • The visible symptoms and signs of Hypoactive sexual desire include :
  • Very little or no interest at all in sexual activity
  • Having zero sexual thoughts or sexual fantasies
  • Always wanting your partner to initiate sex
  • Least interest in any kind of sexual activity be it your partner or yourself such as masturbation
  • Difficulty in getting pleasure from sex
  • Lack of pleasurable sensations on stimulation of genitals

Causes of Low Libido

Lack of sex drive can occur due to a number of causes. The causes which are due to low libido turns up include: 

Physical causes: Physical illnesses, medications or any kind of physical changes can cause low libido such as

Sexual problems: Sexual problems such as having severe pain during sex or having an incapability to orgasm, can reduce your desire for sex.

Medical diseases:  Many nonsexual diseases which do not have any relevance to sexual diseases can also lower a women sex drive such as arthritis, cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, coronary artery disease and neurological diseases.

Medications: Consumption of specific antidepressants known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors affect the sex drive.

Lifestyle: Having habits of excess intake of alcohol, smoking and street drugs affects female sexual arousal. Alcohol has an adverse effect on fertility, smoking decreases blood flow and drugs improve mood by raising serotonin which ultimately dull sexual arousal.

Surgery:  Any surgery which is linked or has some relation with your breasts or genital tract affects the body image, sexual function and desire for sex.

Fatigue: Fatigue caused due to daily work routine, taking care of children, office work, mental work contribute to low sexual arousal. Restlessness, tiredness or a feeling of exhaustion also leads to low sex drive. 

Hormone changes 

Menopause: Menopause is a phase in women’s life when her body is undergoing a number of changes. There is a drop in estrogen levels drop during this period which leaves you with less desire sex. This hormonal change period has an effect on dry vaginal tissues which finally results in uncomfortable and painful sex. 

Pregnancy and breast-feeding: During pregnancy, a lot of changes takes place in a women’s body. Hormonal changes are frequently observed. Post a baby delivery and breast-feeding, a women’s body has a damper on sexual desire. 

Psychological causes

Certain psychological changes in a state of mind can affect your sexual desire which includes:

  • Anxiety and depression
  • Stress-related to any work
  • Poor body image
  • Low self-esteem
  • Any past experience of sexual abuse
  • Relationship issues with your partner
  • Trust issues or unresolved fights
  • The communication gap between you and your partner of sexual needs and preferences
