Gasly moves to Alpine to set up an all-French lineup in F1

Following his departure from Red Bull, Pierre Gasly will join Alpine for the upcoming Formula One season after terminating his agreement with the junior team AlphaTauri.

A boyhood friend of Esteban Ocon, Gasly will offer Alpine an all-French driver lineup for 2023.

In Formula One, Gasly has only ever won the Italian Grand Prix in 2020.

“I’m extremely excited about the new chapter in my life,” Gasly said in a statement.

Ocon answered with a tweet: “We were just two little kids from Normandy with an impossible dream. Welcome to the Alpine family, Pierrot.”

Red Bull has used Gasly as a development driver. He felt that he was being held as a sort of “hostage” by Red Bull because he was denied the opportunity to drive the large vehicle, which was being driven by Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez.

The modifications made public on Saturday at the Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka are an extension of Formula One’s free agency, which began when Fernando Alonso revealed his intention to switch from Alpine to Aston Martin.

Nyck de Vries is expected to fill the position at AlphaTauri. The 27-year-old Dutch driver has competed in just one F1 race. At the Italian Grand Prix this year, he filled in for Williams’ Alex Albon.

Surprisingly, he placed eighth overall. Some people would consider him Verstappen’s future colleague on the main Red Bull squad.

“I’m extremely excited to join Scuderia AlphaTauri for 2023,” de Vries said. “And I want to thank both Red Bull and the team for giving me the opportunity to drive in F1.”
