Final Fantasy 7 Is Shutting Down

Square Enix’s free-to-play battle royale game Final Fantasy 7: The First Soldier, which was only available for a little over a year, will be discontinued on January 11, 2023. Square Enix made the statement on its website, saying that despite fairly frequent game updates, it was unable to provide the service it had first promised. Square Enix made the decision to end the game as a result. Final Fantasy fans still have a lot to look forward to despite the depressing news.

Square Enix, according to IGN, made the decision to discontinue the game, claiming that they were unable to provide the experience that both the company and the fanbase were hoping for. They consequently made the decision to discontinue support for Final Fantasy 7 Battle Royale beginning in 2019. Shinra Credits, the in-game money, have been taken off of the in-game store as of yesterday, however users who still have them in their accounts can still use them until the service is terminated. According to Square Enix, the service for the game’s non-English versions will stop on October 31, 2022.

The in-game text will only be visible in English after the international version of the game closes, and it will remain that way until the end of Final Fantasy 7 battle royale’s closing, at which point it will be unavailable to everyone. For game lovers, this is terrible news, but for casual spectators, the game’s early termination does come as a surprise. For those with more experience, it seems extremely odd to see a firm discontinue a product that, in their own words, the fanbase did not deserve.

Regardless of how well-liked it was among players—or not—Final Fantasy 7 battle royal began spending money rather than making it. One would contend that the loss is negligible for a corporation the size of Square Enix and that they could have easily taken some money from any of the top-grossing titles to maintain the mobile battle royale. In the end, mobile games, of which there are more than twenty on the present global market, only account for 6% (a rough estimate) of Square Enix’s revenue.
