23 people were killed and 27 people injured when a massive explosion held at the firecracker manufacturing factory in Gurdaspur Punjab. The explosion occurred in a high-densely populated area of Punjab, Gurdaspur. Many of the people trapped under the debris and the rescue work continued till the late night on Wednesday. It was an unauthorized firecracker manufacturing factor.
When Did This Incident happen?
Inspector General (Border Range) SPS Parmar said that the explosion in the firecracker factor took place around 4 pm on Wednesday in the residential area of Gurdaspur. The impact of the explosion was so high that the nearby buildings were also damaged. In some nearby buildings, the window panes were also shattered.
As per the locals of the area, the firecracker factor was illegal and was running for many years. The factory was storing and manufacturing crackers for a Nagar kirtan. Some other locals also said that the firecracker factory was running in the area for many years. Several times the complaint against the factory was filed to the local administration.
Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder said in a tweet “Deeply anguished to learn of the loss of lives due to the blast in the firecracker factory in Batala. Rescue operations are underway with the DC & SSP heading the relief efforts”. A magisterial inquiry into the explosion was also launched by the Chief Minister regarding the same.
Sunny Deol, Gurdaspur MP also said in a tweet that “Saddened to hear about the news of blast in Batala factory. NDRF teams and local administration have been rushed for the rescue operation,”
